waiians are recognized as some of the earliest ecologists, and have always shared a special relationship and spiritual link with the ocean and its inhabitants.  In April, Maui Ocean Center will recognize this remarkable connection with Hawaiians and the Sea.  Learn about the Hawaiian culture from Hawaiian cultural practitioners during sit-in talk story sessions.  Guests will also have the chance to participate in hula lessons and discover marine animals with interesting tales of Hawaiian legend.  Aquarium activities will also include up close turtle encounters, interactive naturalist presentations, and the chance to whale watch with the experts.  Seascape Ma`alaea Restaurant will offer a delectable lunch special for Easter on April 20th.  Maui Ocean Center’s Annual Coloring Contest will also launch this month for keiki!  See below for further details.
Event: Fins and Flippers Tour
Description: Learn fascinating facts about sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour.  Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  Tours are offered Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am and 1:30pm for $10 per person plus Aquarium admission.  Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center.  Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle.  Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population.  This activity is included with Aquarium admission.  Visit www.mauioceancenter.com for more info.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday

Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles!  Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles.  The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet.

Event: Monk Seal Foundation Info Booth

Description: Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation (MSF).  MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this endangered species.  This activity is offered from 10am to 2pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Discovery Center.  A fun children’s craft will also be provided.  For more info on the Monk Seal Foundation, visit www.monksealfoundation.org

Event: Harbor Plaza Whale Watching
Description: Here a spout, there a spout!  Volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be here to help visitors spot whales from the Aquarium’s Hammerhead Harbor Plaza.

Easter Day Lunch
Description: On Sunday, April 20th, the Aquarium’s award-winning ocean view Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant will offer a delicious lunch special in celebration of Easter.  The Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant is open daily from 11am-2:30pm.  Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068.  Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops side of the Aquarium.

Event: Hawai‘i’s Unique Oceans Coloring Contest
Description: The Aquarium’s annual coloring contest, held in honor of World Oceans Day, encourages ocean appreciation and awareness in children grades K-5. The theme of the contest is Hawaii’s Unique Oceans and the grand prize for the top three entries that best represent this theme is an annual membership to Maui Ocean Center. Winning and finalist entries will be displayed at the Aquarium beginning the week of World Oceans Day, June 8th. The last day to submit entries is June 2, 2014.

Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana

Description: Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson.  At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.  Schedule subject to change.
