Maui Ocean Center kicks off the island’s much anticipated whale season in January with “Crazy for Koholā”, a two-month promotion celebrating the return of the Koholā (Humpback whales). Throughout Crazy for Koholā, guests will be invited to discover the fascinating world of the Humpback with exciting whale-themed activities, including special interactive naturalist presentations, children’s story time and crafts, and whale watching from Harbor Plaza. A complimentary kid’s whale activity page, which can be completed at home or at the Aquarium, will be available online and at the Aquarium’s front gate. Aquarium activities, excluding tour upgrades and lunch specials, are included with paid admission.


Event: Harbor Plaza Whale Watching

Description: The Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza overlooking Ma‘alaea Bay is the perfect place to watch for fantastic acrobatic feats from Humpback whales. Beginning in January and continuing throughout whale season, volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be at Harbor Plaza on Mondays from 9am to 1pm to help guests with spotting whales and interpreting different whale behaviors.

Event: Fins & Flippers Tour Upgrade
Description: The exclusive Fins & Flippers tour upgrade is offered on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am. For a fee of $10.00 plus admission, guests will join a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist and discover fascinating facts about sharks and sea turtles. The tour also includes a behind-the-scenes visit to the Aquarium’s wet laboratory and chance to observe the feeding habits of sharks and sea turtles at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits. Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. Event: Story Time & Craft Hour
Description: Children ages 3-12 are invited to a captivating story time followed by a fun ocean-themed craft! Story Time & Craft Hour is hosted by an Ocean Naturalist and takes place every Saturday at 11:30am in Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiians and the Sea Exhibit.

Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana

Description: Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson. At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages. Schedule subject to change.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu

Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on January 16. Beginning at 2pm, this interactive program is hosted by Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team at the Turtle Lagoon. Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Monk Seal Foundation Booth

Description: Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation. MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this
endangered species. This activity is offered from 9am to 1pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal
Discovery Center on the last Sunday of the month. A fun children’s craft will also be provided. For more info on the Monk Seal Foundation, visit www.monksealfoundation.org. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Chinese New Year
Description: Kung Hei Fat Choy! Celebrate the Chinese New Year with lunch at the award-winning, ocean view Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant. A special menu will be offered just for the holiday as well as our regular daily lunch menu. Open daily from 11am to 2:30pm. Aquarium admission not required to dine. Reservations are optional; call (808) 270-7068.
