Event: “I Love Marine Life!” Photo Contest
Description: Maui Ocean Center will hold its fifth annual “I Love Marine Life!” photo contest from June 1 to August 1. Capture the beauty of Hawaii’s marine life in a photo and enter Maui Ocean Center’s 4th Annual “I Love Marine Life” photo contest for the chance to win a year membership to the Maui Ocean Center and a photo eco-tour with Photo Safari Hawaii. This photo contest is open to everyone. The last day to submit an entry is by 5:00pm on Friday, August 1, 2014; winners will be announced the week of August 6 and be displayed at the Aquarium until Labor Day, September 1, 2014. Event: Shark Tour Package Upgrade
Description: Separate shark fact from fiction! Learn about the different shark species at the Aquarium and discover what is myth and what is fact about these often misunderstood creatures. Tours are led by an Ocean Naturalist and include a sneak peek behind the scenes. The Shark Tour Package is offered exclusively during Shark-tacular in June and July, every Tuesday at 11:30am for $15 per person plus admission. Event: Fins and Flippers Tour
Description: Learn fascinating facts about sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour. Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon. Tours are offered Fridays at 11:30am and 1:30pm for $10 per person plus Aquarium admission. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Night at the Reef: Incredible Corals
Description: Maui Ocean Center presents the next Night at the Reef after-hours event featuring Incredible Corals! Take this rare opportunity to view Aquarium exhibits after dark, enjoy education stations at various exhibits, and interact with an expert team of divers, aquarists and ocean naturalists. Complimentary coffee and iced tea will be offered. Heavy pupu, dessert and a cash bar, featuring the Coral Bloom signature cocktail, will be available for a fee. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Project S.E.A. – Link. Reservations are required.

Event: Sea Talk
Discover how researchers are using sophisticated electronic devices to gain new insights into the biology and behavior of sharks in Hawaii during the next Sea Talk; “Shark Tech: Tracking the Hidden Hunters of the Deep.” The talk will be presented by Dr. Carl Meyer, Assistant Researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. HIMB is funded in part by Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System. The shark data collected is available for public viewing at www.pacioos.org. Seating is limited and given on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are recommended by calling 808-270-7088.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles! Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles. The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet.

Event: Red, White and Ocean Blue Day
On July 4th the Aquarium puts an ocean-friendly spin on Independence Day with special presentations and giveaways. Throughout the day, Ocean Naturalists will highlight ocean, land and energy conservation and share helpful hints with guests on they can protect and promote healthy oceans. Children ages 3-12 will receive patriotic giveaways at the Aquarium’s Front Gate while supplies last.

Event: Sleep with the Sharks
The Aquarium will hold public a sleepover for children ages 8-13 on Friday, July 18. Participants will spend an exciting evening at the Aquarium learning about the fascinating Hawaiian marine life with hands-on activities, games, crafts, and more. Sleepovers begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 a.m. the next day (Saturday). Sleepover fee is $60 plus tax per child and includes a pizza dinner, continental breakfast, snacks and a souvenir. Aquarium members receive a 15% discount. Reservations are required by calling 808-270-7075. The deadline to sign up for a sleepover is by 12 noon on the Thursday before. Event: Monk Seal Foundation Info Booth
Description: Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation (MSF). MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this endangered species. This activity is offered from 10am to 2pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Discovery Center. A fun children’s craft will also be provided. Event: NOAA Monk Seal Info Booth
NOAA volunteers will be present to discuss the Hawaiian monk seal with guests. Stop by their info booth from 9am-1pm to learn about Hawaiian monk seals and the on-going efforts to protect this endangered species. For more info on NOAA, visit www.noaa.gov.

Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana
Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson. At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages. Schedule subject to change.
