Event: A Maui FISH-mas
Description: Partake in the yuletide merriment at Maui Ocean Center in December with visits from Scuba Claus, appearances by Elf, delicious holiday food and drink specials, and splendid Christmas ornament sales! All month long, ocean naturalist presentations will share fascinating facts on Hawaii’s marine animals with exceptional holiday-themed names, including the Snowflake Eel, Christmas Tree Worm, Trumpetfish and more.

Event: 12 Days of FISH-mas
Description: Join us December 14-25 as we count down the 12 Days of FISH-mas! There will be delicious holiday food and drink specials at the Coffee Cart and Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant, along with exciting visits from Scuba Claus and Elf in the Open Ocean Exhibit, and holiday treat giveaways during Ocean Naturalist presentations. Join the interactive Dive Link presentations hosted by Scuba Claus at 11am, and Elf at 3pm; Scuba Claus and Elf will wear special dive masks that allow them to speak with the audience, so have your wish list ready!

Description: Shop Maui Ocean Treasures for the perfect holiday trimmings! Event: Book Signing with Janet Spurr, author of “Beach Chair Diaries”
Description: Enjoy a meet and greet with author Janet Spurr in the gift shop at MOC. A self-proclaimed beach lover, Spurr chronicles her love for sun, sand and surf in a delightful collection of short essays. Her beach tales take you from Maui to Maine, and include thought-provoking questions and tips at the end of each chapter. Gift shop will offer a 10% discount on the book on December 22 only.

Event: Christmas Day Lunch
Description: Enjoy scrumptious holiday lunch specials in the award-winning, oceanview Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant on Christmas Day; Sunday, December 25. The restaurant is open daily from 11am-2:30pm. Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068. Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the side of the Aquarium.

Fins and Flippers Tour
Description: Learn fascinating shark and turtle facts on the Fins and Flippers tour. Led by an Ocean Naturalist, the interactive Fins and Flippers tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and the chance to participate in a supervised feed of hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles. Tours are $10 per person plus admission. Reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Wet Naturalist Presentations
Description: Join a Wet Naturalist at Maui Ocean Center’s Discovery Pool for exciting hands-on presentations on Hawaii’s marine invertebrates, animals that lack a backbone. Along with learning fascinating facts about sea cucumbers, sea stars and urchins, guests will have the chance to touch a few of the live spineless creatures!

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center’s Turtle Lagoon at 2:00pm. Interact with the Aquarium’s curatorial team, the staff who care for the animals and exhibits, and learn fascinating facts about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at the Turtle Lagoon at 11:00am for casual turtle talks and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s involvement in the green sea turtle educational loan program. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Celebrate “A Maui FISH-mas” at the Maui Ocean Center

November 27, 2011, Ma‘alaea, Maui, HI – ‘Tis the SEA-son for visits from Scuba Claus, appearances by Elf, delicious holiday-themed food and drink specials, and splendid Christmas ornament sales – that’s right, it’s time to celebrate “A Maui FISH-mas” at Maui Ocean Center!  Throughout December, the public is invited to partake in the yuletide merriment of the season with exciting activities for all ages, along with the Aquarium’s regularly scheduled programs.  More information is available through Maui Ocean Center’s special events hotline at (808) 270-7000 option 3 or at www.mauioceancenter.com.

Naturalist Presentations
From the speckled Snowflake Eel to the vibrant Christmas Wrasse, there is an array of marine animals found in Hawaii that have unique holiday-themed names perfect for the season.  This festive group of marine creatures also includes the Angelfish, red-striped Candy Cane Shrimp, Christmas Tree Worm, Sea Star and Trumpetfish.  Throughout the month, ocean naturalists will share fascinating facts about these animals during presentations, and point out the exhibits in which guests can catch a glimpse of these exceptional animals. 

12 Days of FISH-mas
The Aquarium counts down to Christmas with the 12 Days of FISH-mas, Wednesday, December 14 through Sunday, December 25.  Throughout the 12 Days, there will be delicious holiday food and drink specials at the Coffee Cart and Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant, along with exciting visits from Scuba Claus and Elf in the Open Ocean Exhibit and holiday treat giveaways.  Guests can also join Scuba Claus at 11am, and Elf at 3pm, at the interactive Dive Link presentations; Scuba Claus and Elf will wear special dive masks that allow them to speak with the audience, so have your wish list ready!

Holiday Sale in Maui Ocean Treasures
Find the perfect holiday trimmings in the Maui Ocean Treasures gift shop.  Throughout December, the gift shop is extending discounts on most holiday items, including tree ornaments, Christmas cards, and holiday home décor.  Shoppers can enjoy 35% off from December 1-19 and 50% off from December 20-31.  Admission is not required to shop in Maui Ocean Treasures.  Check in at the Front Gate for complimentary entry to the store only, store-only entry does not include viewing aquarium exhibits.

On Sunday, December 25, the Aquarium’s award-winning oceanview Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant will offer delectable Christmas lunch specials.  The Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant is open daily, including Christmas Day, from 11am-2:30pm.  Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068.  Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the side of the Aquarium.

Fins and Flippers Tour Upgrade
The exclusive Fins and Flippers tour will be offered Tuesdays; December 6, 13, 20, 27 at 11:30am for $10 per person plus admission.  Guided by an Ocean Naturalist, guests will discover fascinating facts about sharks and turtles, tour behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and participate in a supervised feed of marine animals at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour.  Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended.  Call (808) 270-7088 for reservations.

Wet Naturalist Presentations
Guests can explore the incredible marine invertebrates of Hawaii with the help of a wet naturalist at Maui Ocean Center’s Discovery Pool on Fridays and Sundays.  Beginning at 11:30am, a wet naturalist will share fascinating information about the invertebrates found in the exhibit. 
Invertebrates are animals that lack a backbone and include sea stars, sea cucumbers and urchins.  Guests will have the opportunity to touch and feel these living sea critters throughout the presentation.

Turtle-rrific Thursday
Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on December 15.  Beginning at 2pm, this interactive program is hosted by Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team at the Turtle Lagoon.  Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Hangin’ with Honu
Visitors will have another opportunity to learn about green sea turtles during Hangin’ with Honu on Friday, December 30.  A special guest speaker, accompanied by a green sea turtle, will host casual turtle talks at the Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm.  The story behind the turtles at Maui Ocean Center along with interesting green sea turtle facts will be discussed.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Children’s Activities
Throughout the month the Aquarium will host a variety of exciting children’s activities that are complimentary with paid admission.  On Saturdays, children are invited to an exciting story and craft hour beginning at 11:30am in the Hawaiians and the Sea Exhibit.  On December 12, 15, 19, 22, 28 and 30 a booth for children to make ocean-themed crafts will be available in the Marine Mammal Discovery Center from 11am-2pm.  Children’s activities are supervised by the Aquarium’s education team and are appropriate for ages 3 through 12.
