Maui Ocean Center’s “Crazy for Koholā” celebration of the return of the Humpback whales, continues in February. Throughout the month, guests will be invited to discover the fascinating world of the Humpback with exciting whale-themed activities, including special interactive naturalist presentations, children’s story time and crafts, and whale watching from Harbor Plaza. A complimentary kid’s whale activity page, which can be completed at home or at the Aquarium, is available for download here. The Aquarium will also host its popular Sea of Love Valentine’s Dinner on February 14th. Aquarium activities, excluding tour upgrades, lunch and Valentine’s dinner specials, are included with paid admission.

Event: Interactive Naturalist Presentations
Description: Interactive, informative and fascinating Ocean Naturalist presentations are available every day as part of a visit to Maui Ocean Center. Presentations take place throughout the Aquarium from the Living Reef, Turtle Lagoon, Tide Pool and Deep Reef to the Open Ocean exhibits. Ocean Naturalist delight in sharing their knowledge and, when available, marine artifacts for visitors to touch and explore.

Event: Sea of Love Valentine’s Dinner
Description: The island’s most unique and romantic Valentine’s experience is the Sea of Love Dinner at Maui Ocean Center. This popular signature event features semi-private seating among the ocean center’s stunning exhibits and a decadent four-course menu exquisitely prepared by James Beard Nominee Chef Henry Tariga and catered by the award-winning Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant. Dinner is $119 plus gratuity and tax per person, and includes a special Valentine’s lei for the ladies and complimentary welcome glasses of sparkling wine. Seating is limited and advance reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment. Reservations are required for this exclusive event; the public may call 808-270-7088 Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm beginning January 16th.

Event: Harbor Plaza Whale Watching
Description: The Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza overlooking Ma‘alaea Bay is the perfect place to watch for fantastic acrobatic feats from Humpback whales. Beginning in January and continuing throughout whale season, volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be at Harbor Plaza on Mondays from 9am to 1pm to help guests with spotting whales and interpreting different whale behaviors. Included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Fins & Flippers Tour Upgrade

Description:
The exclusive Fins & Flippers tour upgrade is offered on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am. For a fee of $10.00 plus admission, guests will join a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist and discover fascinating facts about sharks and sea turtles. The tour also includes a behind-the-scenes visit to the Aquarium’s wet laboratory and chance to observe the feeding habits of sharks and sea turtles at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits. Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. Event: Children’s Story Time & Craft Hour

Description: The Aquarium will offer a weekly story time and craft hour for children ages 3 through 12. This activity takes place in the Hawaiians & the Sea Exhibit at 11:30am on Saturday mornings. Children will enjoy an intriguing story told by an Ocean Naturalist. Story time will be followed with a fun, marine-themed craft for children to make and take home. A Free Whale Tale activity page which can be completed at home or the Aquarium will be available for download on Maui Ocean Center’s website throughout the month.

Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana
Description: Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson. At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit. This activity is appropriate for all ages. Schedule subject to change.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on February 20. Beginning at 2pm, this interactive program is hosted by Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team at the Turtle Lagoon. Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Monk Seal Foundation Booth
Description: Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation. MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this endangered species. This activity is offered from 9am to 1pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Discovery Center on the last Sunday of the month. A fun children’s craft will also be provided.
