Event: Here a Spout, There a Spout
Description: Maui Ocean Center kicks off the island’s much anticipated whale season in January with “Here a Spout, There a Spout”, a month-long promotion celebrating the return of the Humpback whales.  Guests are invited to discover the fascinating world of the Humpback with exciting whale-themed activities, including special naturalist presentations, children’s crafts, whale watching from Harbor Plaza and a free kid’s whale activity page.

Event: Harbor Plaza Whale Watching
Description: See if you can spot Humpbacks from the Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza.  Volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be at Harbor Plaza every Monday from 9am-1pm to offer guests help with spotting and interpreting different Humpback behaviors.  Located near Ma‘alaea Bay, the Harbor Plaza is a perfect place to whale watch.

Event: Fins and Flippers Tour
Description: Learn fascinating shark and turtle facts on the Fins and Flippers tour. Led by an Ocean Naturalist, the interactive Fins and Flippers tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and the chance to participate in a supervised feed of hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles. Tours are $10 per person plus admission. Reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Chinese New Year Lunch Specials
Description: The award-winning Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant will offer scrumptious lunch specials in honor of Chinese New Year on Monday, January 23. The restaurant is open daily from 11am-2:30pm. Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068. Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the side of the Aquarium.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center’s Turtle Lagoon at pm. Interact with the Aquarium’s curatorial team, the staff who care for the animals and exhibits, and learn fascinating facts about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at the Turtle Lagoon at 11am for casual turtle talks and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s involvement in the green sea turtle educational loan program. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Event: Children’s Story & Craft Hour
Description: Children ages 3-12 are invited to enjoy story and craft hour every Saturday at 11:30am in the Hawaiians & the Sea Exhibit. An Ocean Naturalist will read children an intriguing Hawaiian story to be followed by a fun marine-themed craft.

Event: Children’s Ocean Crafts
Description: Children ages 3-12 are invited to make fun ocean-themed crafts in the Marine Mammal Discovery Center on January 1, 4, 14, 16, 20 and 23.  The craft booth is hosted by the Aquarium’s naturalists and volunteers and available from 11am-2pm on the selected dates.

Celebrate the Return of the Humpback Whales at Maui Ocean Center

November 30, 2011, Ma‘alaea, Maui, HI – Maui Ocean Center kicks off the island’s much anticipated whale season in January with “Here a Spout, There a Spout”, a month-long promotion celebrating the return of the Humpback whales.  Guests are invited to discover the fascinating world of the Humpback with exciting whale-themed activities, including special naturalist presentations, children’s crafts, whale watching from Harbor Plaza and a free kid’s whale activity page.  The Aquarium’s award-winning restaurant will also offer scrumptious lunch specials on Monday, January 23 to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  More information on the Aquarium’s celebration of the Humpbacks is available through Maui Ocean Center’s special events hotline at (808) 270-7000 option 3 or at www.mauioceancenter.com.

Whale Watching
The Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza overlooking Ma‘alaea Bay is the perfect place to watch for fantastic acrobatic feats from the Humpbacks.  Throughout whale season, beginning January and continuing through March, volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be at Harbor Plaza on Mondays from 9am to 1pm to help guests with spotting whales and interpreting different whale behaviors.

“Fins and Flippers” Tour
The exclusive Fins and Flippers tour will be offered once a day at 11:30am on Tuesdays and Fridays.  The cost to upgrade is $10 per person plus admission.  Guided by an Ocean Naturalist, guests will discover fascinating facts about sharks and turtles, tour behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and participate in a supervised feed of marine animals at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour.  Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended.  Call (808) 270-7088 for reservations.

Turtle-rrific Thursday
Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on January 19.  Beginning at 2pm, this interactive program is hosted by Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team at the Turtle Lagoon.  Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Hangin’ with Honu
Visitors will have another opportunity to learn about green sea turtles during Hangin’ with Honu on Friday, January 27.  A special guest speaker, accompanied by a green sea turtle, will host casual turtle talks at the Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm.  The story behind the turtles at Maui Ocean Center along with interesting green sea turtle facts will be discussed.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Children’s Activities
Throughout the month the Aquarium will host a variety of exciting children’s activities that are complimentary with paid admission.  On Saturdays, children are invited to an exciting story and craft hour beginning at 11:30am in the Hawaiians and the Sea Exhibit.  On January 1, 4, 14, 16, 20 and 23 a booth where children can make ocean-themed crafts will be available in the Marine Mammal Discovery Center from 11am-2pm.  A fun children’s whale activity page that can be completed at home or the Aquarium will be available online for download throughout January.  Children’s activities are supervised by the Aquarium’s education team and are appropriate for ages 3 through 12.
