Maui Ocean Center focuses on “being green for the love of the blue” during Going, Going, Gone Green in March!  The month’s activities offer terrific opportunities to discover Hawaii’s unique marine animals that contribute to the health of the ocean.  Other upcoming Aquarium activities will focus on we all can be involved in the environment and conservation stewardship.  Up close turtle encounters, interactive naturalist presentations, and the chance to whale watch with the experts are just a few of the activities included with admission that both children and adults can enjoy.  In addition to the month’s regular activities, the will Aquarium celebrate several special events including Girl’s Day on March 3rd, Green Day on March 17th, and World Water Day on March 22nd.  Maui Ocean Center will also celebrate its 16th Anniversary on March 13th. 

 
Event: Fins and Flippers Tour

Description: Learn fascinating facts about sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour.  Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  Tours are offered Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am for $10 per person plus Aquarium admission.  Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center.  Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle.  Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population.  This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday

Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles!  Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles.  The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet.

Event: Monk Seal Foundation Info Booth
Description: Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation (MSF).  MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this endangered species.  This activity is offered from 10am to 2pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Discovery Center.  A fun children’s craft will also be provided.  For more info on the Monk Seal Foundation, visit www.monksealfoundation.org.

Event:  Harbor Plaza Whale Watching
Description: Here a spout, there a spout!  Volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be here to help visitors spot whales from the Aquarium’s Hammerhead Harbor Plaza.

Event: Girl’s Day Lunch
Description: On Monday, March 3rd, the Aquarium’s award-winning ocean view Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant will offer a delicious lunch special in celebration of Girl’s Day.  The Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant is open daily from 11am-2:30pm.  Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068.  Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops side of the Aquarium.

Event: Maui Ocean Center’s 16th Anniversary

Description: Maui Ocean Center will celebrate 16 wonderful years!  Activities will include Maui Ocean Center Fun Facts, interactive Naturalist presentations, keiki crafts, and Chef Diver presentations.

Event: Green Day, St. Patrick’s Day
Description: On Monday, March 17th, the Aquarium will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a twist by focusing how you can live “green”.  The day will highlight sustainable and green living with eco-friendly vendors, information on the Aquarium’s green initiatives and green tip card giveaways.  Various local eco-friendly companies will share how they too are helping to keep Hawaii green.  Maui Ocean Center’s own green initiatives, such as their participation in Restaurant for Renewables, following of Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program and more will be featured at an informational booth within the Aquarium.  Guests will receive helpful green tip cards naming the many ways to be earth-friendly.

Event: Sea Talk
Description: Maui Ocean Center’s next complimentary Sea Talk Series takes intimate look at the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.  The presentation, entitled “Through the Eyes of the Seal: The Secret Lives of Monk Seals” will be led by Charles Littnan, NOAA Monk Seal Research Program’s lead scientist and research ecologist. In his talk, Littnan will present video footage of the world through the monk seal’s eyes and discuss efforts to protect Hawaii’s seals. Sea Talks are held in the Aquarium’s Open Ocean Exhibit. Seating is limited; reservations are highly recommended.  Call 808-270-7088.

Time: Presentation will begin at 6pm.  Entry is through the Front Gate from 5:30pm to 6:10pm.
 
Event: Sleep with the Sharks, Aquarium Sleepover
Description: Children, ages 8-13, are invited to experience the Aquarium after dark!  During the sleepover, participants will get to explore Hawaii’s fascinating underwater world at night with hands-on discovery lessons and much more.  Fee of $60 plus tax per child includes meals and souvenir. Aquarium members receive a 15% discount.  Advanced reservations are required as space is limited; call (808) 270-7075.

Event: World Water Day

Description: World Water Day is an internationally celebrated holiday that focuses on increasing the public’s awareness of water’s importance in the environment, health, agriculture and trade.  Maui Ocean Center will recognize World Water Day with interactive naturalist presentations, Chef Diver demonstrations, turtle encounters, and booths from eco-organizations from the Maui community.

Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana

Description: Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson.  At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.  Schedule subject to change.
