Event: Hawaiians & the Sea
Description: Experience the Aloha spirit at Maui Ocean Center in March as the Hawaiian Aquarium honors the Hawaiian culture!  Throughout the month, a fascinating series of presentations and demonstrations given by various local cultural practitioners, artisans and crafters will explain the profound relationship shared by Hawaiians and the sea.  Guests can also learn more about the island’s unique culture and marine life with daily Ocean Naturalist presentations, guest speaker talks and daily Hawaiian plate lunch specials in the Seascape Ma`alaea Restaurant.

Event: Harbor Plaza Whale Watching
Description: See if you can spot Humpbacks from the Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza.  Volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be at Harbor Plaza every Monday from 9am-1pm to offer guests help with spotting whales and interpreting different Humpback behaviors.  Located near Ma‘alaea Bay, the Harbor Plaza is a perfect place to whale watch.

Event: “Fins and Flippers” Tours
Description: Discover fascinating shark and sea turtle facts with an Ocean Naturalist as your guide!  This interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and supervised feeds at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits.  Space is limited and reservations are recommended; call (808) 270-7088.

Event: “Meet the Diver” Tour
Description: See what it takes to care for the marine animals and exhibits at Maui Ocean Center.  Learn about the many duties of an aquarist, tour behind-the-scenes and participate in a supervised feed at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits.  Space is limited and reservations are recommended; call (808) 270-7088.

Description: Maui Ocean Center celebrates 13 lucky years on Sunday, March 13th!  In addition to employee recognition, guests are invited to join the festivities with anniversary cake while supplies last and a variety of fun and exciting specials celebrating 13 lucky years!

Event: Green Day
Description: Celebrate a different kind of green this St. Patty’s Day!  The Hawaiian Aquarium makes the holiday all about green living with special presentations, eco-friendly vendors, highlights on the Aquarium’s green initiatives and green tip card giveaways.  Throughout the day, Ocean Naturalist presentations will include important information on ocean, land and energy conservation while various local eco-friendly companies share how they too are helping to keep Hawaii green!

Special activities to honor the Hawaiian culture in March


February 7, 2011, Ma‘alaea, Maui, HI – Experience the Aloha spirit at Maui Ocean Center in March as the Hawaiian Aquarium honors the Hawaiian culture!  Throughout the month, a fascinating series of presentations and demonstrations given by various local cultural practitioners, artisans and crafters will explain the profound relationship shared by Hawaiians and the sea.  Presentations given by Ocean Naturalists and local Hawaiiana guest speakers will offer more information on the unique aspects of the island’s culture and marine life, including the significance of fishing, canoe voyaging, tide pools and more.

Throughout March the Aquarium’s award-winning Seascape Ma’alaea Restaurant will serve Hawaiian plate lunch specials daily.  The blend of Hawaiian cuisine with the influence of the island’s melting pot of culture combines to offer guests a unique and savory dining experience!

The Hawaiian Aquarium will also celebrate 13 lucky years on Sunday, March 13th.  In addition to employee recognition, guests will be invited to join the festivities with anniversary cake while supplies last and a variety of fun and exciting specials celebrating 13 years!

Whale Watching
Guests can enjoy whale watching from the Aquarium’s Harbor Plaza throughout the month.  Located near Ma‘alaea Bay, the Harbor Plaza at Maui Ocean Center is a perfect place to spot whales.  Volunteers from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will be in the Harbor Plaza on Mondays from 9am to 1pm to help guests with spotting whales and interpreting whale behaviors.

“Fins and Flippers” Tour
Fascinating facts about sharks and sea turtles are revealed on the interactive “Fins and Flippers” tour.  Offered on Tuesdays; March 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th at 11:30am, the tour incorporates a trained Ocean Naturalist guide, sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium and a supervised shark and turtle feed at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  The tour is appropriate for all ages.  Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour.  Cost is $10.00 per person plus aquarium admission.  Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling (808)270-7088.

“Meet the Diver” Tour
The interactive “Meet the Diver” tour will introduce guests to the important daily duties of divers and aquarists at Maui Ocean Center.  “Meet the Diver” is offered on Wednesdays; March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th at 1pm for $10.00 per person plus aquarium admission.  The tour includes meeting a member of the aquarist team, the staff responsible for the care of marine animals and exhibits at Maui Ocean Center, observing the rarely visited behind-the-scenes areas of the Aquarium and a supervised shark and turtle feed at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.  Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour.  Space is limited and reservations are highly recommended by calling (808)270-7088.

Green Day
On Thursday, March 17th, guests are invited to celebrate a different kind of green during Green Day at Maui Ocean Center.  The Aquarium makes the holiday all about green living with special presentations, eco-friendly vendors, highlights on the Aquarium’s green initiatives and green tip card giveaways.  Throughout the day, Ocean Naturalist presentations will include important information on ocean, land and energy conservation while various local eco-friendly companies will share how they too are helping to keep Hawaii green.  Maui Ocean Center’s own green initiatives, such as installation of wind turbines, participation in Restaurant for Renewables, the upcoming solar energy project and more will be featured at an informational booth within the Aquarium.  Guests will receive helpful green tip cards naming the many ways to be earth-friendly to take home.

Turtle-rrific Thursday
Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on March 17th.  Beginning at 2pm, this interactive program is hosted by the Aquarium’s curatorial team at the Turtle Lagoon.  Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Kealia Pond Cleanup
The Aquarium will host its first cleanup of the year on Saturday, March 19th.  The cleanup will take place at Kealia Pond in Ma‘alaea from 9am-12pm.  Maui Ocean Center members are invited to join in this activity, and each participant will receive a 1-Day Journey admission pass from Maui Ocean Center as a mahalo for their kokua.  Bottled water, rubber gloves and trash bags will be provided by Maui Ocean Center.  Participants are asked to call (808) 270-7085 to sign up.  Keep visiting our website for more information on the upcoming cleanup activities.

Hangin’ with Honu
Visitors will have another opportunity to learn all about green sea turtles during Hangin’ with Honu on Friday, March 25th.  A special guest speaker, accompanied by a green sea turtle, will host casual turtle talks at the Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm.  The story behind the turtles at Maui Ocean Center along with other interesting green sea turtle facts will be discussed.  This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Children’s Activities
Throughout the month, the Aquarium hosts a variety of exciting children’s activities that are complimentary with paid admission.  On Saturdays, children are invited to a story and craft hour beginning at 11:30am in the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit.  Stations offering whale-themed crafts are available in Marine Mammal Discovery Center on March 8th, 14th and 25th from 11am-2pm, and on March 13th, 20th and 27th from 11am-3pm.  Crafts will follow the month’s theme on Hawaiians and the Sea.
