Ocean ‘Ohana Month

Over 25% of the marine life in Hawaii is endemic, found only in Hawaii and nowhere else in the world! In May, the Hawaiian Aquarium puts the spotlight on its unique ocean ‘ohana (family) with intriguing presentations by knowledgeable Ocean Naturalists. Discover fascinating facts about Hawaii’s amazing endemic species, from tiny spineless invertebrates to vibrantly-colored reef fish and more.

Kama‘aina & U.S. Military Appreciation Month
Daily; May 1-31, 2013

Maui Ocean Center says “Mahalo!” to Kama‘aina and U.S. military guests with 50% off general admission throughout May. Appreciation rates are $12.75 for adults, $7.25 for children ages 3-12, and $11.25 for seniors ages 65+ with proof of valid Hawaii state or U.S. military ID at the time of purchase at MOC’s front gate. All prices are plus tax. This offer is not combinable with other admission discounts and promotions.

Coloring Contest
Daily; April 1 – May 31, 2013

Students in grades K-5 are invited to enter Maui Ocean Center’s coloring contest, held in honor of World Oceans Day on June 8th. The goal of the contest is to promote ocean awareness among Maui’s students. There will be three categories; grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. The top three entries that best represent the theme “Hawaii’s Unique Oceans” will win an Annual Journey Pass to the Aquarium.

Hangin’ with Honu

Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at the Turtle Lagoon for casual turtle talks and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s involvement in Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program.

Fins and Flippers Tour

Learn fascinating shark and turtle facts on the interactive Fins and Flippers tour. Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, the interactive Fins and Flippers tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium’s wet laboratory and the chance to observe a supervised feed at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon.

Children’s Story Time & Craft Hour
Saturdays 11:30am; May 4, 11, 18, 25

Children ages 3-12 are invited to an intriguing story time in the Hawaiians & the Sea Exhibit. Story time is hosted by an Ocean Naturalist and includes making a fun, marine-themed craft for keiki to take home.

Boy’s Day and Mother’s Day at Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant
11am-2:30pm; Sunday, May 5 & Sunday, May 12

Celebrate Boy’s Day and Mother’s Day with a scrumptious lunch at the award-winning, oceanview Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant. The culinary team will serve up delectable menu selections created just for these special holidays. Aquarium admission is not required to dine. Reservations are optional; call 808-270-7068.

Monk Seal Foundation Booth
Sundays 10am-2pm; May 12, 26

Learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal at the Monk Seal Foundation educational info booth in Marine Mammal Discovery Center. MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this critically endangered species. A fun craft for children will also be provided.

Turtle-rrific Thursday

Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center’s Turtle Lagoon. Interact with the Aquarium’s curatorial team, the staff who care for the animals and exhibits, and learn fascinating facts about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles.

Sleep with the Sharks

Exciting adventures at the aquarium after hours! Sleepovers are for children ages 8-13 and include hands-on discovery lessons, ocean-themed games, crafts, and more.
