Event: World of Weird
Description: Maui Ocean Center explores the weird and wonderful creatures of the deep in October, with highlights on some of Hawaii’s most bizarre-looking marine animals with even stranger abilities and defenses. Enjoy fascinating naturalist presentations on animals such as the frogfish, octopus, and flounder, ocean-themed children’s crafts, a Creepy Creatures scavenger hunt, World of Weird fish fact cards and exciting Halloween-themed activities at the end of the month! Event: Fins and Flippers Tour

Description: Learn fascinating facts about hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour. Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon. Tours are offered Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am for $10 per person plus Aquarium admission. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Wet Naturalist Presentations
Description: Get a hands-on feel for Hawaii’s marine invertebrates! Join a wet naturalist at the Discovery Pool on Thursdays and Sundays from 11:30am-1:30pm to learn interesting facts about these spineless marine animals. You’ll even have the chance to touch and hold live sea stars, sea cucumbers, and urchins with the help of the wet naturalist! This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Poetry & Joke Contest
Description: Maui students in grades K-12 are invited to enter Maui Ocean Center’s annual Poetry & Joke Contest, held August 1, 2012 through October 31, 2012. Entries must express the uniqueness of Hawaii’s remarkable ocean and marine animals. Joke entries are open to grades K-5; poetry is open to grades 6-12. Entries are limited to one per student and must be the student’s original work. Winners and finalists will be announced on Maui Ocean Center’s website and displayed at the Aquarium. Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles! Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles. The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Sleep with the Sharks
Description: Children ages 8-13 are invited to a fun and educational Halloween-themed sleepover at Maui Ocean Center. Experience the Aquarium after dark and explore Hawaii’s fascinating underwater world at night with hands-on discovery lessons and much more. Fee of $60 plus tax per child includes meals and souvenir. Event: Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Halloween at the Hawaiian Aquarium
Description: Join us at the Hawaiian Aquarium for fun-filled Halloween-themed activities! On October 30-31, keiki ages 3-12 visiting the Aquarium can ‘trick-or-treat’ in the Maui Ocean Treasures gift shop to receive candy and Halloween trinkets. On October 31, guests can watch as scuba divers carve pumpkins underwater in the Black Tip exhibit at 11:30am and Open Ocean exhibit at 1pm. More information available at www.mauioceancenter.com.

Event: Children’s Ocean Crafts
