Description: Maui Ocean Center explores the weird and wonderful creatures of the deep in October, with highlights on some of Hawaii’s most bizarre-looking marine animals with even stranger abilities and defenses. Enjoy fascinating naturalist presentations on animals such as the frogfish, octopus, and flounder, ocean-themed children’s crafts, a Creepy Creatures scavenger hunt, Wet Naturalist presentations, and exciting Halloween-themed activities at the end of the month! Event: Creepy Creatures Scavengers Hunt
Description: The Creepy Creatures Scavengers Hunt will take guests on an adventure to find and learn about many bizarre and fascinating creatures that have even stranger abilities and defenses. The scavenger hunt is designed so answers can be found at home as well as at Maui Ocean Center and will be available at the Aquarium’s Front Gate and on the website. Fins and Flippers Tour
Description: Learn fascinating facts about hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour. Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon. Tours are offered Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:30am for $10 per person plus Aquarium admission. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Event: Keiki Poetry Contest & Joke Contest

Description: Do Hawaii’s bountiful ocean and marine life inspire you? Tell us about it with a joke or poem for the chance to win a year membership to the Hawaiian Aquarium! Maui Ocean Center’s second annual Poetry & Joke Contest, for students in grades K-12, will be held through October 2013. Entries must express the uniqueness of Hawaii’s remarkable ocean and marine animals. Joke entries are open to grades K-5, poetry is open to grades 6-12. Entries are limited to one per student and must be the student’s original work. Winners and finalists will be announced on Maui Ocean Center’s website and displayed at the Aquarium. Hangin’ with Honu
Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population. This activity is included with Aquarium admission.

Event: Sleep with the Sharks
Description:
Children ages 8-13 are invited to a fun and educational Halloween-themed sleepover at Maui Ocean Center. Event: Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana
Description:
Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an extraordinary opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson. At 11:45am, following the Aquarium’s 11:00am dive presentation, Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages. Schedule subject to change.

Event: Wet Naturalist
Description:
Wet Naturalist presentations offer guests a hands-on experience with Hawaii’s marine invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without backbones and include creatures such as urchins, sea stars, and sea cucumbers. With the help of a wet naturalist inside the exhibit, guests will have the chance to touch and feel a few of these spineless creatures! These exciting presentations take place every week at the Aquarium’s Tide Pool and Discovery Pool starting at 11:30am on Thursdays and Sundays. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description:
Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles! Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles. The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet. This activity is included with Aquarium admission and is appropriate for all ages.

Event: Monk Seal Foundation Info Booth
Description:
Guests can learn about the endemic Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s most critically endangered animals, at the educational info booth provided by the Monk Seal Foundation (MSF). MSF volunteers will share information about monk seals, the challenges they face, and how to help this endangered species. This activity is offered from 10am to 2pm in the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Discovery Center. A fun children’s craft will also be provided. Event: Halloween at the Hawaiian Aquarium
Description: Join us at the Hawaiian Aquarium for fun-filled Halloween-themed activities! On October 31, keiki ages 3-12 visiting the Aquarium can ‘trick-or-treat’ in the Maui Ocean Treasures gift shop to receive candy and Halloween trinkets. Guests can watch as scuba divers carve pumpkins underwater in the Black Tip exhibit at 11:30am and Open Ocean exhibit at 1pm. More information available at www.mauioceancenter.com.
