Event: Fins and Flippers Tour

Description: Learn fascinating facts about hammerhead sharks and green sea turtles on the exclusive Fins and Flippers tour. Led by a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist, this interactive tour includes a sneak peek behind-the-scenes at Maui Ocean Center and the chance to observe the feeding behavior of sharks and sea turtles at Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon. Event: Poetry & Joke Contest
Description: Tell us a joke or write a poem about Hawaii’s amazing ocean for the chance to win a year membership to the Hawaiian Aquarium! Maui Ocean Center’s first annual Poetry & Joke Contest is open to students in grades K-12. Entries must express the uniqueness of Hawaii’s remarkable ocean and marine animals. Joke entries are open to grades K-5, poetry is open to grades 6-12. Entries are limited to one per student and must be the student’s original work. Deadline to enter is October 31, 2012. Winners and finalists will be announced on MOC’s website and displayed at the Aquarium. Prizes include one-day and year journey passes to MOC. Visit mauioceancenter.com for details on how to enter.

Event: Turtle-rrific Thursday
Description: Enjoy up close and personal encounters with green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center’s Turtle Lagoon. Beginning at 2pm, guests are invited to join the Aquarium’s aquarist team at Turtle Lagoon, where the team will measure, weigh and check the general health of the turtles. The aquarists will also share fascinating facts about green sea turtle biology, behavior and diet. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Event: Hangin’ with Honu

Description: Discover the fascinating story behind the green sea turtles at Maui Ocean Center. Join a special guest speaker at Turtle Lagoon from 11am-2pm for casual talks about turtles and an up close encounter with a Hawaiian green sea turtle. Along with interesting turtle facts, guests will learn about the Aquarium’s partnership with Sea Life Park Hawaii’s green sea turtle educational loan program and its benefits to the world’s green sea turtle population. This activity is included with aquarium admission.

Event: Children’s Ocean Crafts

Become Immersed in Natural and Cultural Treasures at
Maui Ocean Center, The Hawaiian Aquarium


August 27, 2012, Ma‘alaea, Maui, HI – A genuine commitment to sharing and preserving the rich natural and cultural treasures of its island home has earned Maui Ocean Center the name, “The Hawaiian Aquarium”. The 3-acre marine park successfully integrates the island’s host culture in a variety of programs, including naturalist presentations, Hawaiian cultural advisors, special events and activities, Hawaiian craft vendors, and over 60 vibrant exhibits teeming with marine life found only in Hawaii. In fact, twenty-five percent of the animals displayed at the Aquarium are endemic to Hawaii, or in other words, found nowhere else in the world.

Throughout September, the Hawaiian Aquarium offers guests a further immersion into Hawaii’s culture with intriguing talk story sessions by entertainer and cultural practitioner Vene Chun. Offered twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the Hawaiians and the Sea Exhibit, these engaging talks include topics such as Hawaiian ancestry and ‘aumakua, fishponds, Polynesian voyaging, canoe sailing and more.

Fins & Flippers Tour
The exclusive Fins & Flippers tour will be offered on Tuesdays and Fridays; September 4, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25 and 28 at 11:30 am. Guests will learn about sharks and sea turtles while on a guided behind-the-scenes tour of the Aquarium’s wet laboratory. A chance to observe the feeding habits of hammerhead sharks and green turtles will follow at the Hammerhead Harbor and Turtle Lagoon exhibits. Tours are $10.00 per person plus aquarium admission. Due to limited availability, fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour. Space is limited and reservations are highly recommended by calling (808) 270-7088.

Grandparent’s Day Lunch
On Sunday, September 9th, the Aquarium’s award-winning oceanview Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant will offer delectable Grandparent’s Day lunch specials. The Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant is open daily from 11am-2:30pm. Reservations are optional by calling (808) 270-7068. Admission is not required to dine in the restaurant; restaurant-only entry is located on the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops side of the Aquarium.

Turtle-rrific Thursday
Guests can learn about Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles in an up close and personal setting during Turtle-rrific Thursday on September 20. Beginning at 2:00 pm, this interactive program is hosted by Maui Ocean Center’s aquarist team at the Turtle Lagoon. Guests will learn about the biology, behavior and diet of green sea turtles from the team that cares for the animals on a daily basis. This activity is complimentary with Aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Hangin’ with Honu
Visitors will have another opportunity to learn about green sea turtles during Hangin’ with Honu on Friday, September 28. A special guest speaker, accompanied by a green sea turtle, will host casual turtle talks at the Turtle Lagoon from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The story behind the turtles at Maui Ocean Center along with interesting green sea turtle facts will be discussed. This activity is complimentary with Aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages.

Children’s Activities
Throughout the month the Aquarium hosts a variety of exciting children’s activities that are complimentary with paid admission. On Saturdays, children are invited to an intriguing story and craft hour beginning at 11:30 am in the Hawaiians & the Sea Exhibit. On September 2, 12, and 23 children can have fun making ocean crafts at the booth in Marine Mammal Discovery Center from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Children’s activities are supervised by the Aquarium’s education team and are appropriate for ages 3-12.
