INVASIVE FISH IN HAWAI`I
Maui Ocean Center is in search of your creative fish recipes but not just any fish recipe; we are looking for those that include the three most reef threatening and invasive species introduced to Hawaiian waters. The To`au (Blacktail Snapper), Ta`ape (Blueline Snapper), and the Roi (Blue-spotted Grouper). Maui Ocean Center is also looking for recipes that utilize the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Sustainable Seafood Guide.
The To`au, Ta`ape, and Roi were all fish that were introduced to Hawaiian waters for the purpose of sport and the hopes that everyone would enjoy them as a food source. Unfortunately, very few fishermen were fishing for them and their populations exploded. Now they are taking over entire reef systems! Many have referred to the Ta'ape as the 'Yellow Plague' due to their destructive nature. The Roi are an aggressive fish that will gorge itself on young reef fish such as weke, kumu, and more. Many scientists are conducting studies, and the state is even using tax money to eradicate these fish. Maui Ocean Center wants to join with many others who are trying to bring awareness to the situation before it is too late. Below are several websites to use for reference. Please visit these websites and join the cause by participating in the various events and studies. (Information taken from www.hawaiiinvasivespecies.org)
